I don't really have the time or money to race, but I am curious to know what you all think a reasonable lap time for a novice on a 600cc bike would be.

For what its worth, I have been doing three track days a year for the past couple of years. That isn't racing, so I don't know how closely it approximates what racing is really like.

Well I can give you what my buddy and I are doing, we are on older 600's

My times 96 CBR600F3 1:43 - 1:45
My buddies 92 CBR600F2 1:42 - 1:44

We are pretty consitant in both race times and our trackday times. I have seen guys also doing 1:50's on SV650's. It's all about how hard do you want to push, and with track days I would run 8/10ths since you are probably don't have a deticated bike for the track. I'm guessing on this.

Will,

You can also check lap times for most classes and races including novice heats in the results section of the website. Should give you an idea of what folks are turning at both Spokane and Pacific. You can check omrra.com for Portland times.
Occasionally you'll see some slow times across the whole class which usually means it was raining.

You are right- I don't have a dedicated track bike and my bike is daily transportation as well as fun. So I don't push as hard as if I could toss it and had time and a place to put it back together. I was still curious, since I run about 1:50 at both tracks on a TT600 with street tires. Sounds like that would be more or less last!

:50s on a TT600 on street tires is honkin'. Hopefully they're M1s or Pilot Powers!

I'm not that much faster (:42s on a ZX-10R), but ride with the same concern of tossing my commuter into the terra firma. I fit Supercorsas for track days - cheap insurance.

Mike Sullivan did a 01:27.734 his last lap of 600 SuperSport on 6/12.

1:50 on street tires is a good start. I agree with Bikerscum, put on some Supercorsas and have your suspension set up by Dave at GP or similar for track riding if you havent already. Someone else mentioned checking the times from the novice races... you should be ok to start novice anytime but better if you are in the 40's... ;) but its not that big of a deal. Once you start you will be surprised how quickly your times come down.. I started in the 39's and after 2 races hit a 37 flat..

I did the 1:50 at Pacific. 1:51 at Spokane. I don't know how they relate. The tires were Pirelli Diablos (not Corsas or Diablo Ts). I finally found a set of spare wheels so the next time out will be on Corsas. I don't think Super Corsas are worth it at this level.

Hey Will,

With just suspension set-up you should be able to drop some time off your lap times pretty quickly! When I was in my second year of racing I had my suspension done and I dropped 4 sec in Portland, and 3 sec at Pacific. Easy to do when your ging slow anyway! :)

I have only done 1 track day on my 03 954RR w/ street tires. I don't know what I was running but i'll find out. I plan on running Novice class this year and have a 05' R6 race ready for next year. I do know that some riders down there run just as fast if not faster on there 600's then there liters. Good luck to everybody and I'll see ya nect year!
