You know I always am baffled when I check out a newbies racer web-site and they have all these sponsors and talk about how fast they are at a track day and how there times are so much faster then they should be. Yet they have never been in a race were 35 lunatics are all going for the same turn 1 at a 155mph. I guess all it takes to get a sponsor is your own web-site and link it to other companies and bam you are a pro. Now I am an old timer thats for sure, but in my time we had to earn our sponsors not earn them by a fancy web-page. I respect the person who is turning 1.50's at seattle as much as the guy turning 1.26's simply for the fact of putting yourself on the line. But come on enough of the 329 sponsors stickers and juiced up web-site's. Just an old guy talking..... M. Alcott

For the most part, sponsors could careless what lap times you are turning, how you finish the race, etc.

For sponsors, its a means of advertising. Getting their name out there and helping increase business. As long as you are not an asshat and a "negative" image to their company, the only thing they care about is how much their name gets out there.

Building websites and linking to their sites via links is exposure and even more advertising for them. Sponsors LOVE it. The more business you bring in for them and the more their name gets out there, the happier they are.

Racing is expensive and anyplace you can get help, helps!

Sponsorship is about business.

Dear Mr. Alcott. RACING IS EXPENSIVE!!!! ANy help I can get I will take it! Our sponsors are very meager for sure. By advertising for them they give us a small discount, Basically getting our foot in the door and having them watching us and looking at us. Hopefully if we do well they will step it up each year. Not to mention the attention it brings to WMRRA. I expect to earn every bit of help that I receive and I am also extrememly thankful for that help. I aslo don't think that just because you have a website and sponsors that you automatically think that you are a pro. In order to attract sponsors you have to have something to sell or offer and for us "Newbies" the best format for that is a website. I am a Novice and know that I have alot to learn, but to knock on "Newbies" for having their act together and attracting any level of sponsorship is just wrong. They should receive an attaboy for all the work it takes to first create and post a website, (which costs money) and then all the leg work, phone calls, mailings, and emails to contact potential sponsors and let them know where you are at and what your intentions are.

Just a "NEWBIE" talking....

Didn't see your name on the racer list for this year.

I agree and I am a novice this year. I have lots of stickers on my bike but that is because its boring without them. I don't think each one is a sponser. Usually I put the stickers on I get from the various products I am using for trackdays (now racing).

When I trash my current fairing the next one will be bare until I earn sponsers. Hell I only run 1:50's around PR so it'll be some time. :)

It is about Advertising and promoting a Positive Image for Sponsors. If you have your act together, anyone can obtain some level of sponsorship.

Well tarhell from the sounds of it you are already a crazy fast pro,,scrapping your knee in the rain, going to be out front of the pack so you do not not get lapped, and already running 7 seconds faster the average. Dang you are in for the show already I guess, just ask you. I am really just giving you a hard time, I do not race in WMMRA I am down here in Cali. but I read how good you think you are already without touching a real race and I am kind of taken back. You do not want a bulls-eye on your back in this sport and trust me when I say that. Just my two cents from a old man who can through down with a 250 2 stroke 4 seconds faster then the average at the toyota 250. Get it....M.A.

I think you are reading into what was said a little too much. You DO NOT know me at all and YOUR interpretations are way off! I'm just trying to have fun no matter what and I really don't care for sarcasim and negativety.

I think its pretty badass when you haven't even raced yet and you have sponsors! I raced motorcross and although its not the same type of racing it's not like a lot of us have never raced before. I will be contacting some of the people I worked with in motorcross to take a look at the novice group this year. Getting sponsors is hard work. +1 for Adam

I couldn't agree more! However I think there are some Novice racers who think there better than everyone else before we even get on the track. Everyone is on a different page. Some have been on the track some haven't even seen it. I am lucky enough to have an older brother who has raced for 2 seasons now and I've stayed down there on the weekends learned what I could and did a couple track days.

The most important thing i've learned is stay "Humble". There are alot of people who can teach you locally. My plan is make alot of friends run some laps and learn from each other. The last thing people want on there back is a target! I don't have a problem with sponcers help is help.

I wouldn't be suprised if i'm the last one to finish the 8 laps actually. My number is 926. If you see me in the pits stop on bye and bullshit for a bit!

I'll be there on Wensday for the 2Fast trackday if anyone is planning on coming down. Hope the weather holds up!

Here's a thought - maybe it's just a fun sport that we are excited about being a part of. Heaven-forbid us from having a web site where we can share photos with friends, maybe get some help from sponsors who just want to sell more stuff, or post lap times to keep up the competitive spirit among friends. I don't think anyone thinks they are pro or a bad-ass, I know i don't. I guarantee you i'll be one of the most humble newbies out there this weekend, but i don't think a stickered up bike and a fancy web site should say i'm something different. I will have both, so i hope no one thinks i'm an ass clown :-) I think it's pretty lame that some dude goes onto some other clubs web site and rips on newbies from a different state- yer cool !

Andrew N -- I agree. Being a Novice is daunting enough, and everyone is doing his/her own thing, and trying to find their place in the club-level roadracing world. Sponsors are a great thing -- both sides bring something to the table.

Amen brother....I..in NO WAY...think I am a Pro..and have been and will continue to be one the most humble guys out there. And this guy, from another state, IS an ass clown.
Oh yeah...check out my site..I updated it for him.

On another subject, are you going to be at the track day Friday? I will be there Friday, sleeping at the gate Friday night and will be there the rest of the weekend. (Tentin' It!) I plan on doing the heat on Sunday. Hopefully the weather isn't too bad.

I don't think that there is any problem with haviing sponcers. Heck this sport is costly enough and ANY help we could all use i'm sure! So far everyone i've meet has been really nice and we all share info on what we have learned ect....

Can't wait till this weekend. Let's just hope it doesn't rain so I don't have to spend 380 on rain tires. Or maybe they can sponcer me :)!

My first year as a novice I had LP and I-90 motorsports, not big but they sure helped on not taking i$$$ out of my pocket as quick. this year I was much wiser and asked everyone for help and signed on with those that I liked and got the best deals with. Remember it never hurts to ask.

I had sponsors emailing ME before I'd even been on the track - but for me it was about if/how I could represent them. Sponsorship is worthless if you can't hold up your end of the bargain. Getting sponsorship isn't hard. Keeping it is.
