BIKES that is..dont go getting too sad... So long to one of OMRRA most popular and fastest bikes! Two time lap record holder, multiple year champion and pretty much unbeatable bikes...its also one of my favorite bikes i built.
DPW aka Dan Wilson's EDR Performance Built GSXR1000 is off to its new owner. I usually never really care, since they are just bikes, but man it was pretty hard to see her tied down on the trailer to Seattle for this weekends races. After DPW crashed out of 750 this weekend, his shot at the championships was over, so he decided to wait out rest of year...maybe.
He asked if i knew anyone that might buy the G1k..i asked a friend and within 24 hours the new owner called and bought it! Seems they knew/heard of this bike.
This bike was a 2005 and in 3 seasons never ONCE hit the ground!. This old girl was SOO tough, in 2007 we ran a VERY leaned on motor (over 14:1 compression) and she made @197rwhp but was honestly way too much Tq and would just spin tire everywhere, it one day started sounding rough and running hot...
DPW "Hey E. she sounds a little angry"
EDR "Yeah, well nothing we can do now, lets just keep adding oil/water and let her rip...she;ll hold..she loves me" (we were at Miller AMA National)
She ran ok all weekend. The following weekend was "The Weekend" when Doug Chandler, a HUGE Idol of mine and someone i really enjoyed watching came to town on his $100,000 Full on superbike (TC, Ohlins, etc, etc) While DPW's EDR G1k was FAST..it had stock brake calipers, stock wheels, hell even the air box/valves/crank/clutch/etc were stock! If you saw that race you saw one of the greatest races EVER at PIR! The two battled so hard lap after lap, shattering a 4+ year old lap record. Dan took the victory and ill never forget it! One of my happiest race memories!!! I beat a factory race bike! (well, dpw did with my help)
Later we got the motor apart to fix it since she was really running hot now, and burning oil like mad. Well, once apart i found she had split the cases/cylinder block!! The engine had a 6" long split right between #2 and #3 cylinders (common on BIG hp and life) yet SOMEHOW she held together for me and dpw to beat Doug Chandler...thats one tough biotch!
We re did the motor this winter aiming for more usable hp and i played a lot with cam timing, port work, etc to "soften up" the huge hit of Tq it had from 7-9k. We added the FULL BPD TC/QS/Zfi system and again this year, NO ONE touched DPW! Imagine if DPW was Alan's size!!! 1:06 flat for sure!
He reset the new PIR track record again this year on it, and so far everyone else is almost a 1/2 second behind him!
The bike went out like Seinfeld...out on the top!
I will really miss the DPW-EDR GSXR1000. I think she gave us both nothing but huge smiles, lots of attention, and TONS of wins! (I believe DPW went undefeated for TWO FULL YEARS...minus the 2nd race battle with Chandler in which he lost by .1 sec at the line!) In two years she NEVER ONCE HAD A DNF or MECHANICAL! Pretty good for a bike REALLY getting rode hard!
Thanks for the GREAT memories old girl...please be just as good to your new owner. It will be odd to have an OMRRA event and not see the Black/Orange missile with big DPW on it....the bike got a lot of spectators to come out to our club and watch.
Luckily, DPW and EDR have some things in mind for her new replacement...but will never be the same.
Good luck to the new owner...get this..its a WOMAN RACER! YES..a woman canadian roadracer bought her. I REALLY hope she treats it with a gentle right hand...or turns the TC up.
