What's good gearing for a stock 3rd generation SV650 around Pacific?

Seems a little high when stock is a 15/44 Figure that a 15/42 or 15/43 would be better and keep the revs's down lower.

yup I run the same gearing...it's pretty much perfect for PR. Tipping into T1 you are almost at the rev limit but don't hit it. Now if you have some motor work you might change it up a bit

I run the same as Buick. It's what came on the bike and seems to work for me RPM wise. Maybe someday I'll be enough of 'speedy rider' to worry about 1 tooth here and 1 tooth there.

I've heard that the tach on the SV is 500 rpm proud. If I get a good drive out of the bus stop I'm just under the redline on the tach. I figure I got about 500-750 RPM to spare before the rev limiter becomes an issue...

Most SV's, mine included, make optimum power below 10 grand. To go above that is just a waste and puts undue stress on the motor. The only time the limiter is a concern is when I miss a shift, otherwise I am never near it. I gear my bike so that as I am leaned over in turn one my rpm are just below, or at 10 grand. Once you stand it up coming out of one your rpm's will drop a tad as you get back on the center of the tire. My opinion, anyways...

I did not know this. Thanks for the advice. I managed to bump up on the rev limiter a couple times out of the bus stop last time out.

ummmm yeah. I'm about 15 horsepower and oodles of torque short of being able to pull that gear....

Like I said earlier, I adjust my gearing for turn one. I make a couple of sacrifices elsewhere, but for me it works. If you determine what you want, then make adjustments until you get it. It might be for better drive out of the slower corners at the expense of top speed, but if it works for you then do it. HP doesn't necessarily determine gearing.
