Everytime I go to the track I can't imagine the sport can get anymore fun. And then it does.

The weekend started out with the Adrenaline Freaks track day. Weather was mostly dry, just a little bit of a drizzle in the middle of the day. I was determined to get into the 35s this weekend so after a couple easy sessions to warmup I started going a little harder. I was focusing on getting a better drive out of 2, 4 and 7. I felt like I was getting better in those areas so I tried putting some hot laps together and got a best time of 1:35.19. I took it easy the rest of the day, I was trying to make sure my tires held out throught the weekend.

Saturday morning started out slow, I was exhausted. Weather started out a little gray but the forecast was looking nice. I saw I was gridded in the 2nd row (much better than 10th like last race!) so I know where I was, I set my goals for the race, my 2nd as a novice. A top 10 finish and a lap or two in the 35s. I knew I could get a decent start and then it would just be a matter of holding off the fast guys on liter bikes as long as I could.

First practice went well, took it easy and kept the bike upright. I had about 5 hours to kill before my race so I stole Kevin’s pitbike and practiced wheelies for about 3 hours as this is a valuable race skill. 750SS went out and so I got suited up and got the bike ready to go. The end of the race was coming up so I threw on my helmet, flipped on the camera and waited. And waited. The news came out that the rest of the day was cancelled and several riders went to the hospital, including my teammates Kevin and Randy (although they were able to drive in their own cars there, not transported by ambulance.) Thankfully later that night we learned everyone was ok.

I woke up a little later on Sunday and was pleased to see perfect weather. Forecast was for 75 degrees and sunny. And I had two races. Awesome. Practice went pretty nicely and I was anxious for the first race. Same grid position and I had the same goals as Sunday. At 11am our race went off, took a nice easy warm-up lap and took my spot on the grid. Light went out and we were off. I got a pretty decent start and got in front of everyone on the front row except #936 and #905. I chased those for a lap until they started to gap me out of the busstop. Came into the chute when Jim (#924) passed me on the left about as close as I’ve ever been passed (stupid liter bikes ;) ) Good times. Lost a couple more spots later in the race and ended up 6th or 7th. Best time was a 1:35.4, pretty happy about that.

For race 2 I started on row 2 again. I got pretty much the same start as last time except I let Darren (revhard) get in front of me for most of turn 2. I was determined to keep up with Paul and Ryan(?) in the front and was having a blast for the first two laps. Then on lap 3 I got on the gas out of 7, my back tire spun up and the bike slid a ways. Immediately I thought “Oh no, I’m pulling a Jared!” but my bike loves me more and got back in line. But I had to back off the pace, my tires were just finished. I lost a few more spots as the race went on, I was pretty pissed I couldn’t get on the gas but it’s my own fault for not flipping my tire or something. Lesson learned. I think I finished 6th or 7th again, I checked my lap times after the race and my best lap was a 1:34.2! My goal for the year was to get into 34s so it’s time revise that!

Video and pics up soon.

good race write up man! I think I saw you spin up out of 7...I think what happened was you went out a bit wide onto the dirty part of the track, might have even touched the gravel a bit. I saw about 3-4 guys REALLY go through the gravel Sunday. 2 of them so much so that I had to run out on the hot track and sweap it up and then run back before 1st came through again cause it was all over the place!

Congrats on meeting your laptime goal, that always feels awesome!

Here's the video from race 2:

The sound is ok at first but is out of sync later on. I'll try to get race 1 up in a couple days, it's messed up right now.

Since you are doing so good you better buy that bike an exhaust, sprockets etc.

Sprockets I got, exhaust is still stock. Actually I think I need to get rearsets first, I keep dragging them.

You dummy. Get some rearsets, don't even think twice about that one.
Then get the exhaust soon too.
You got sprocket and chain on it...what are you running?

I am proud that you are doing good on my old bike. How does it pull when you are next to someone else on a 600? It always seemed to do really good for me, but I am a light weight.

Did you get the sag done yet? You better have! How close was it already set for you?

Yeah, maybe I'll just get the rearsets in a couple weeks. I'm -1/+1 on gearing, seems pretty good so far.

I think the bike pulls alright for stock. I figure I'm down a couple hp since it's flashed for a slip-on but I keep up with all the 600s that aren't built. I'm hopefully going to get some engine work done this winter also.

The suspension was setup by Dave and it feels pretty good. The front end was pretty close how it was but the back was a little soft, damping was pretty far off too (compression I think.) It feels pretty solid but I'm tearing up the tires pretty bad on the left side. I've been running takeoffs though, I need to start with a fresh set so we can see what's going on. I think I could have hit 33s in the race if I had fresh tires and wasn't scared to drag the pegs so hard, they touch in 3, 6 and 7.

I'm hopefully getting a new shock and fork internals this winter too. Rearsets, slip-on, shock, fork internals, engine work and full pipe. That's the list, in that order.

Pet peeve - did you set the rear height (shock length/shims) to what it should be? Dragging pegs might be that you're too low on the rear.

I'm +5mm in the back right now. Might go to 7. But the issue is stock rearsets. Aftermarket Vortex ones for that bike are about 1/3 of an inch narrower and I'd have them about 3/4 of an inch higher.

I talked to Barry about the same thing this weekend because I just bought a fresh set on wednesday, and had about 30 whole laps on the rear and had a giant trench on the left side of the tire. Barry had a hunch that the tires weren't getting enough heat in them, so he let me borrow a pair of ChickenHawk warmers, had me flip the tire, and come back to him at the end of Sunday. Perfect wear.. So use those fancy digital tirewarmers of yours, and set them to 180F..

My chunking issue was too much rebound...

Could be any number of things.

I bet that is my issue with the NTecs as well. I get a wear line about 1 - 1 1/2" from the edge on the left side of the tire. I am probably not riding them hard enough to keep enough heat in them, as I don't have any tirewarmers and they start from stone cold each time.

I also noticed on Thursday (June 12th) when the ambient temperature went up, the wear on the tire was greatly reduced.

who's in favor of a "novice only" tire warmer sale? Any takers?

I would be... if my budget didn't preclude me buying anything 'new'. I am in the market for used though :)

Laura is great to deal with and the warmers she sells are awesome! I highly recommend them if you are in the market for new warmers.
