Team Slednecks-EDR Performance ZX6R's get great results from Miller AMA race weekend!
Josh Galster:started 29th Finished 18th
Misit Hurst: Started 39th Finished 32nd
It was a beautiful morning on Sunday June 1st at Miller Motor sports Park in Tooele Utah. Our AMA 600cc Super Sport race was scheduled for 9 laps and at 10:30am. The temps were perfect, sky's sunny, warm 78degs out, track temp a perfect 98--101 and we were all fired up and ready to go!
Saturday the EDR Performance crew spent the remainder of the day getting the two bikes and one back up bike ready. I met with the riders one on one to go over stratagy and ideas. We discussed tire compounds, suspension changes that were made, needed to be made, gearing options, and general race on track plan. Both riders were happy with the bikes for the most part.
Misti felt the new taller gearing, while helping her in a few spots like front straight was hurting off corner drives. She also wanted to stick with the same tires as we qualified on..after looking over my notes and the tire's performance and such things as wear, life, temps etc i determined the med/soft front and soft rear would in fact be the best choice and last all 9 laps (60k). We had made big strides in the chassis on Friday and Saturday and i felt we were as close as we would get on the bike and Misti agreed the bike was good and to not touch much else.
Josh was loving the new taller gearing, still getting great drives, but now having even more top speed on the bike. The previous electrical gremlin was now fully solved after Zach Gordon (EDR assistant this weekend) removed the t-tap and soldered the power connections. We further discussed the changes made to the bike, i not liking his back home chassis guy recommended 25cc more fork oil (he was bottoming badly at sears) but Josh is the type to just stick with something, so we made the best of it and reset the suspension/sag. We decided to leave the 44t rear sprocket on it for the race. On tires, I'm still somewhat new to working with Pirelli and their setups, compounds, pressures, etc. I want to again thank chuck from Pirelli for answering all this Dunlop guys questions..lol. He was great and helpful. I really don't care what brand tires my guys run, so long as THEY are confident on them. We determined the SC3 hard front was the only one that would go the full 9 laps (60k) and I suggested we stick with the SC2 med rear tire. IMO it would give the best grip while also making it the race distance, not easy at MMP. Josh upon consulting with Pirelli made the call to run the softer J207(SC1.5 apparently) and to be honest i was pretty adamant about not changing last minute, but the rider got to override me and we ran that tire.
We got bikes all warmed up..oil temps up...Poo was going over the gas..Zach was watching the tire temps...I was adjusting them to both Dunlop/Pirelli's recommendations and my own thoughts from experience and what I have seen this weekend...(they run very different psi's for the two brands..AND the two riders even! Misti preferring low psi/soft tires) The bikes were READY! The 5 min horn goes off..."let's go guys"
I let Zach and Poo go to the grid along with Misti's Boyfriend John and Josh's dad for the pre race stuff..they had never done so and thought they would like to do it (really not that glamorous) and i would just get the pit wall, back up bike (you can change to b/up bike in AMA if red flag in 1st 3 laps) and just try to settle down. i still, after 15+years racing, and over 8 years doing AMA"s get pretty ****ing stressed/nervous the min's before a race..."did i double check that...did he get that part fixed...is the mapping perfect...should i have made josh run my tire choice...etc...etc" its really not pretty whats going on in a engine guys head moments before a race..especially with two NEW engines (only done hours before they left from Portland on Monday). Then i settle down...realizing the bikes not only were smoking fast..but we had not touched one thing on them all week so far...telling myself "jesus christ...relax..they are running great..settle the fuxk down" i told myself...the HR dropped back down :D
The start was off....and HOLY CHRIST my guys were weaving thru the pack! They went into T1 and around the infield...out of T8 we could see them again right in front of the pit wall and WTF WOW...Josh had shot up to 24th and Misti was in 26th!! she made up 13 spots on the start in an AMA! This was gonna be good!
Throught the great racing, many top teams had mechanicals, engine failures, a few crashes, etc. I was like 'sweet...lets keep the momentum up'.
Misti off her ROCKET of a start was battling with some top Privateers like Deckler, Gittere and almost even her teammate Galster! She settled into a rhythm and rode great..she was in the 3:05's (best yet) and was going great in 28th-29th..but as race went on she fell back a bit and then was stuck behind Steve Davidson...unfortunately when she was behind him, her times would not improve and she found it hard to get around him..she had motor on him and was faster in some parts, but other parts he was very strong in and she just could not get around him to get back up with the huge 25th-30th pack...she would manage a great 32nd finish! IN her typical post race commentary she was SUPER excited. I love that about her....win or loose, or whatever, she is just so happy to be out there, banging bars, racing, beating guys, and going faster every time she was on the track. Her attitude is great! The tires looked great..rear showing signs that lap 9 was a bit of work maybe, but i think we made the right call. She said "man i motor'd like 15 guys on the front straight at the start and was like 'wow I'm way up here with these guys battling this is awesome'...the bike worked awesome, i just got stuck behind that guy (davidson) and he was so fast in a few sections i couldn't get around him..and the last lap i could feel the tire going off" She did a GREAT job!
Onto Josh....on lap 1-4 Josh was doing great, he had moved up about 5 spots and was battling with the likes of top AMA privateers...Nicky Moore, Fernando Amantini and Eric Pinson. Josh was able to get Amantini fairly easily on the back straight out of T9 pulling away from the Venezuelan and was battling good with Pinson..in doing so, allowing Moore to get just out of reach..soon he was battling for 17th position! I was SO happy...then on lap 5 out of the VERY fast tight T9..the rear went full steering lock sideways, and the rear shock bucked violently in protest..."shit! that ****ing tire is gone already!..goddamn it...easy josh..turn the TC up a bit and use the straight" well he must have heard me cause he then was coming out of the corners a bit slower/easier..but we had a clear HP advantage over Pinson and you could see it was driving him nuts to run almost into Josh on the exits, but then to watch Josh pull 2-4 bikes on him down the straights. It made me smile a bit i gotta be honest. In the end Pinson rode smart and just followed josh and his destroyed rear tire...eventually making a great pass and able to hold him off. Josh would finish 18th! A GREAT effort and especially considering the tire! IN the hot pit josh was pissed...well more disappointed cause he knew he rode awesome and did his best "damn it..i hate to lose a spot like that...man that tire was gone on like lap 4...i kept turning up the TC but not sure it really helped after that...im glad i had my new motor...what? i did a 59'? (2.59) Sweeeet...im pretty stoked about that then even with this tire", but a racer never likes to have his tires be the reason they lost a positions. That's racing. Sometimes you make a call you hope helps and it ends up being wrong..but Josh was then super excited to see he got into the 2;59's and still made up a lot of ground and got 18th!
I wanna really thank my crew, Chris "POO" Adolphson and Zach "Ca Caeww" Gordan for all their help. Thanks to Misti's B/F John for all the wrenching and aussie humor. Mike Jbara a CSBS student of Josh and Misti's for the help. Josh's parents for being two of the coolest parents and SUPPORTIVE as hell to josh (and not getting offended by our dinner manners/drinks Friday...lol) oh and Nico too..lol
Big thanks to the SLEDNECK'S guys! These guys rock! Jason is one of the coolest guys, supportive of these two riders and the whole Slednecks crew/family is very cool! (Check out www.slednecks.com (http://www.slednecks.com/) for some bitchin gear)
I wanna thank Gary, Nolan, Chris and Sarah back at the shop as well for the LONGGGG hours the week before (4 days to build TWO motors, prep 3 bikes, map them, service them, etc) and the bikes worked/ran FLAWLESSLY again this weekend! I'm so happy with how our bikes ran and how well our riders did.
This also moves EDR Performance rider Josh Galster up to 16th overall in the 600SS Championship!!!
Thanks very much,
