Hey I'm curious about the effectivness of the Aero hump on leathers? Does it really provide more stability for your head at high speeds? Would you buy a set of leathers without it?

I don't know if it makes a difference with regards to aerodynamics. I've had leathers both ways and didn't really notice a difference. If anything, it's more protection for your spine and it's actually nice if you end up sliding on your back in a crash...kind of helps keep your head up if you're sliding feet first and gives you better visibility!

I've definitely noticed a difference. I wouldn't get a set w/o one.

I've had occasion to use my old leathers (without hump) and newer leathers (with hump) on the same day and noticed a drastic increase in helmet (RF-1000) stability with the humpy leathers -- though it could be the helmet + leathers, or just me.

I had the opportunity to try both and the hump actually makes a big difference on how much weight is put on your neck muscles going down the straight. With no Aero Hump an area of negative pressure is created right behing your helmet which pulls your head back, the hump fills that void so that the airflow going over the windscreen and over your helmet continues over the hump and down your back without turbulence.
I have read that there could be as much as 10lbs difference in the pressure-weight between a suit with or without hump. In my experience it is something very noticeable.
. . . and yes the hump is cool!

I understand the hump is also useful for holding a water bladder during endurance racing. The additional back / neck / spine protection would be a plus as well.

2 hump... or NOT 2 hump????
2 hump... or NOT 2 hump????
You have to ask? :D
Humps are cool? I am not cool, so I get to do whatever I want.

Here's a cool Hump Joke....
.
AT the Vets office...3 Labrador retrievers were talking and.....
The black Lab asked "So, what are you here for?"
The brown Lab replied, "I'm a pisser. I piss on everything... the
Sofa, the curtains, the cat, the kids. But the final straw was last night
When I pissed in the middle of my owner's bed."
The black Lab said, "So what is the vet going to do?"
"Gonna cut my nuts off," came the reply from the brown Lab. "They
Reckon it'll calm me down."
The black Lab then turned to the yellow lab and asked, "Why are you Here?"
The yellow Lab said, "I'm a digger. I dig under fences, dig up
Flowers and trees, I dig just for the Hell of it. When I'm inside, I dig up
The carpets but I went over the line last night when I dug a great big hole
In my owner's couch."
"So what are they going to do to you?" the black Lab inquired.
"Looks like I'm losing my nuts too", the dejected yellow Lab said.
The yellow Lab then turned to the black Lab and asked, "Why are you Here?"
I'm a humper," the black Lab said. "I'll hump anything. I'll hump
The cat, a pillow, the table, and fence posts, whatever. I want to hump
Everything I see. Yesterday, my owner had just got out of the shower and
When She was bending down to dry her toes, and I just couldn't help myself. I hopped
On her back and started humping away".
The yellow and brown Labs exchanged a sad glance and said, "So, nuts
Off for you too, huh?"
The black Lab said... "No, I'm here to get my nails clipped."

As other's have said... a huge difference between having a hump and not. More helmet buffeting and pressue w/o a hump. I definetly won't ever have a suit w/o one again.
Even Fergie agrees...
My humps...my humps, my humps, my humps...check it out.....
It drives the brothers crazy... ;)
Almost all new suits today come with the hump (except the cheap ass non protective type) I would absolutely recommend a suit with one for both aerodynamics and safety, but hey I have only ever worn Dainese. Also suits made with humps are usually indicative of a better suit than one without a hump.

But if your suit does not have a hump ACME in Portland will add one for you for a great price (Shameless plug for my good buddies! :bigok:)

The hump definitely softens the impact when landing in the blackberry bushes on T6. And the baseball gravel on T4, and the tire wall on T2, and...
OK, OK, maybe it's time to become a cool person with a hump. Instead of wearing a 45 lb suit, I can wear a 48 lb suit.

Does this means 2 humps are better than one?

Maybe the hump on my Vanson isn't large enough? I didn't notice much of a difference going from my old vanson w/out hump to new w/hump. The Vanson hump is definitely smaller than most.

Hey Dan,
Did you notice any difference in quality from your old Vanson leathers to the new ones? I've heard bad things about the new Vanson leathers because of moving their manufacturing overseas. I have 10 year old Vanson leathers I'm planning on replacing soon and I'm looking at options.
Thanks,
John

I got a new Vanson suit 2 years ago and love it. I've crashed twice and they look brand new. I got the dual zipper entry, custom built...very comfy. I'm not familar with the move to overseas production, not sure if mine were built prior to that.

I highly recommend a suit from Helimot out of CA. The leather is top quality, they make the suits in house from more measurements than your local tailor, and you can have any or none of tons of options. They are great people to work with and their suit is outstanding. The hump is made from the same material as their back protector and body armor. It squishes when you push your thumb into it (leaving no sharp edges to wear through in a get off) but is hard as a rock if you hit it. 1st rate. Their hump is like a scoop also with the front ventilated and has a zipper to open it up. If you use their back protector it's shaped as to let the air directly to your back. I like to put a wet chamois in mine on very hot days and let it drip on my back.
They're not cheap though at around 1800.00 starting, plus options. But what is your ass worth?
I'm not sure about the wind turbulance thing (have heard diff opinions/tests) but the extra protection in a get off is a good thing. Kinda like the pro football linebackers that wear the large collar on the back of their neck I think.
