I'm thinking of joining Novice for the 06 season and am wondering if any one has found any companies out there offering supplemental medical insurance covering road racers? I haven't had much luck in finding one.

If you have Medical insurance through your place of employment, they most likely will cover you in the event of a crash. I check with my Insurance company every year, and I get the same answer, as long as I'm not making any money at it, I'll be covered.
However, the last time I went to the hospital for a racing incident, my insurance company denied the initial claim since the hospital noted it as a car/motorcycle incident. After some explanation my insurance company covered it no problem.

Thanks for the input. I'm working on getting an answer from my insurance company right now. I'm still interesting in finding another supplemental medical coverage though if anyone knows of one. Unfortunately I have first hand knowledge of how devastating the cost of medical bills can become.

Years ago they used to offer supplemental type ins and my brother had coverage racing 250's. I have no idea if they still do or not.

I just called Performax (my health coverage through work), and they read to me a specific exclusion, explicitly calling out hang gliding and motorcycle, automobile, and boat racing. I got no clear answer on track days, as she wasn't sure (but said that if I'm on a track, that could be considered racing). I'm sticking to "timed competition" as my definition of racing...

So I called COBRA (thanks Railer) and was immediately shut down. No such product exists that provides medical coverage for racers. And without me mentioning my previous conversation on exclusions with Performax, she said she was working on a denied claim of a hang glider.

What I learned today is this: don't hang glide - that shit's dangerous!

The search for extended medical coverage continues...

I Just Have Blue Cross Of Idaho. It Has A Fairly High Deductible, But The Rates Are Very Reasonable, And They Covered My Last Racing Incident With No Questions. I Dont Know The Availability In All States. You Might Check That Out.

Regence BlueShield Catastrophic coverage. $330/quarter, $1500 deduct, does not cover basic office visits, physicals, or Rx. I think there's a $5000 annual max, before which coverage is 80/20. After $5k is reached in a year, they cover 100%. This coverage works for whatever you're doing, regardless the element of danger. Hang gliding is covered. Motorcycle racing is covered. So long as you're not paid to do these things professionally, you're covered during timed competition.

Even better, which I just signed up for, is a regular medical coverage that includes the catastrophic coverage called Break-Through (or something). $163/mo, $500 deductible, office visits, Rx, AND vision (important to some - I've had lasik). The coverage is also 80/20, with the max per year at $3,000. Sounds like a deal to me! Same coverage rules - you can't be pro and get this plan.

http://www.wa.regence.com/contact/ Hold times are 20 minutes easy, so be prepared. The Individual Plan number didn't pan out for me, but I got a live person from the local Group Plan number that forwarded me to another live person in a fraction of the standard hold time.

Check it out! :)

Aflac will NOT cover motorcycle racing related injuries. I've checked and double checked.

Railer -

$163/mo for their Break-Through plan (regular health plan). $500 deduct, then 80/20 coverage until $3k, then 100% coverage. Just so happens I save $60/mo by going with this instead of my company "benefits".

$330/quarter for Catastrophic (only covers cartwheeling through weeds during off track excursions) - 80/20 coverage to $5k, then 100% coverage. I know someone who has this policy and it suits just fine.
