Holy crap, open up a can of worms why don't you. Everyone has an opinion on this one!
I personally have a Dainese Wave (http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=3&L2=17&L3=&L4=&item=DAI_1875762-001-MD_G&tier2=95) and I like it. I feel 'protected' with it on it seems to be well constructed.
The only first hand experience I have with it is a lowside in T2, Spokane. Did it protect me? Maybe, I slide on my back a long ways over the pavement and in the gravel with no injuries. :lmao:
-From another post I am doing well. Just had a foot of snow and a ice storm! Did one track day in the fall at Summit point and had a blast. Just trying to figure out what to race in CCS next year. Another SV or a air cooled Ducati?-

There is a guy in Cali that makes back and chest protectors for Nicky Hayden and Colin Edwards to name a few. He is a great guy and the service he offers is pretty cool. He will have you take your measurements and send you out a sample foam to make sure it fits then will send you out the finish product. Here is a review and all his info.

And, ACME Motowear is the local retailer for Imact Armor. We are in Portland. We come to most every WMRRA event and every OMRRA event. Can even catch us at some track days. Talk to Nico, Chris B., Kevin and Brian Pinkstaff, Oliver Jervis, Brian Moe, and half a dozen others from WMRRA that have purchased these protectors from us.

Another CE level 2 back protector is the Forcefield Pro 2 http://www.forcefieldbodyarmour.co.uk/back_protector_sport.asp
I'm getting a new back protector next year....I just haven't decided between the Forcefield one or an Impact Armor back protector.

@ one time all the haydens were wearing these from helimot. when nicky was sponsored by joe rocket he was wearing daytona boots underneath a custom-made joe rocket sleeve. wouldn't be suprised if the same went w/other protective gear as well
http://bohnarmor.com/
i like the bohn cause it can be long enough to go below your tailbone & offers a bit of more hip protection too.

That is the back protector I have (well the original one where the shouldard blades aren't as protected).
Its pretty pathetic that you would wear one brand of boot under a "cover" for another brand. Guess it is all about the bling.

I like the knox brand, it wraps around your kidneys a little and is comfortable on the bike. I don't know which one I have, I bought it two years ago.

The concern I have with the Bohn, is that there are exposed areas not covered by the hard plastic (or whatever is on there, carbon?) and the rest is soft padding. Any sharp bits that were to hit those soft areas of the protector could be compromised.
The new stuff that has peeked my interest is the Forcefield TPro. I think it probably has some of the best protection out there, but to get that protection it is VERY heavy and bulky and won't breathe too well. I saw them at the show in Seattle. I'm in talks to be a dealer with them, so stay tuned. They are not custom. Whereas the Impact Armor will cover all your parts, shoulder blades down to the tail bone and around the soft spots over your kidneys. The Forcefield does not have that type of coverage.
I think Impact Armor and Forcefield have their benefits and their cons, but both are very good. Just depends on your application and priorities. Both are comprable in pricing.

I have the T-Pro Forcefield. I dont' find it a pain in the ass at all to wear. it doesnt breathe but that hasn't really bugged me all that much. At the time I bought it, there wasn't anything better out there.

Call up Kevin Klemmer. Poor guy ran off SRP T2 last Sept and flipped off the bike, landing straight on a rock, square on his spine. Turned a "hey champ, this is a wheelchair, get to know it" in to a mildly fractured vertebra. Dainese something.

What about Helimot? I am thinking about their chest protector but the winter weight hasn't come off and there isn't much room in the leathers.

Is there any standard or certification for what constitutes a legal, or back protector that passes inspection?
You know, like helmets having a DOT or SNELL standard?
Could someone just show up with a whack of facesheilds duct taped together and a bungee cord?

There is a CE certification level for back protectors used in Europe, but the ones that qualify for it are generally single-use, like helmets, and most of the common ones (A*, Teknic, Joe Rocket etc) probably don't qualify for it. I don't think WMRRA requires anything specific.
