Fumbling along in the dark, three members of Majik Xtreme Mike Amy and Harlan managed to set up our pits in the middle of October, the make up round #3 of our CMRA Regional Series. 7 am finds the temperatures hovering around freezing, our breath blowing fake smoke rings as we unloaded our bikes out of the back of our pickups, praying for some warmer weather.
Saturday practice was postponed until after lunch, whist all of our CMRA riders waited patiently for the gates to open and the asphalt to warm up. Luckily for us our good friend Kel Davidsen joined us for a few sessions on Saturday practice, piloting Mike’s new 07 GSXR-1000. Starting Open Superbike would secure Kel a top 5 finish! After a horrendous season, Kel deserves it. Coming round corner 6 I could saw the first red flag flying. Easing to a stop just outside the chicane, I could see the remnants of a crashed motorcycle, and grew sick as I could see it was Kel, the guy who NEVER (and I mean never) crashes. Best wishes to Kel for a speedy recovery from a broken collarbone, wrist and bruised ribs,. You are one tough cookie!
Sunday found our Majik riders competing in Senior Open, Middleweight Sportbike, Middleweight Superbike, Heavyweight (a very first for me) and of course the granddaddy of them all, Open Superbike.
Heavyweight was the very first race on the docket after lunch for this Majik gal, and I was super-dooper nervous! Racing the un-bridled 750 for the first time on cold(ish) asphalt had my heart racin. My start was terrible, (awful really) and found me arriving into corner one in dead LAST place. Putting my head down I worked hard to claim a few positions. Approaching the brake markers in corner #1, I frantically attempted to pull in my clutch to do a few downshifts before making the hard left hander to no avail. I had no choice but to commit to the corner in 5th gear, with no engine braking, as my lever was stuck! Scared silly I slowed, finishing the race, in 9th position to find my brembo brake adjuster lodged between the handlebar and the clutch lever. PHEW!! I am so glad that was over, but still happy that I pulled 1:27’s out of that schmoz! I prepared for Middleweight Superbike at the end of the day that found me finishing a respectable 9th after clinging on to our leaders for ½ the race. Watch out next year guys I hope to tag along for a few more laps!
Our teammate Harlan was getting pumped up for his senior open race, where his goal was to (to literally quote the mocha prince) “All I want to do is just beat Will”. Watching from the carousel Harlan found himself IN FRONT of his good friend Will for the first few laps! Cheering him on wildly from the back of the truck we hoped he could cling on to the lead. The torque of the Buell was just to great for Harlan to overcome and he found himself in a fierce battle with another racer, swapping positions mid corner each and every lap! Harlan returned to the pits in 7th position for a quick drink of water, a small pause, then off to complete his Middleweight Sportbike race where he finished 15th.
The end of the day found our boy Mike gridding on pole for the very last round of Open Superbike, the 10 laps that would make our break the Championship for Majik. Before the race Mike sat down mathematically to see what he had to do achieve his goal of repeating a championship victory. With the points lead over the next competitor all he had to do at the very least is finish in 4th position and keep it on 2 wheels. The flag flies launching our super bikes off the line finding our guy in the lead, after one of the BEST lightning starts I have EVER seen! Mike settles in to lead the pack for the first few laps of the race. Riding smart, he does not challenge for the lead again, after being passed on the outside of corner 1, and tucks in behind the leader. Tugging on the bars out of the chute, he flies past the checkered flag, in a colossal stand up wheelie to claim 2nd place points. Winning our #1 plate for 2 years in a row! In the history of the Calgary Motorcycle Racing Association only 2 racers have won back to back championships, and our guy is one of them.
Sweetie, words cannot describe how proud of you I am.
Congratulations to everyone that participated with the CMRA this year, it was a memorable season spending it with some good friends making lasting memories. Huge high fives to everyone that reached their goals, won their championships, and had an enormous amount of fun. We will see you at the banquet!
Special thanks go out to the best darn pit crew in the world, Karl, Josh and Alex, you guys were amazing all year long and we couldn’t (nor would we even want to) do it without you guys.
And to our sponsors with made this 2007 season possible, we hope we have made you very proud of us. Walt Healy Racing, Conform Works, Dirty Kustoms, RCRacing, Torry and Son’s, Fabutan and Tigershark Racing, we look forward to a new and even better 2008. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to wear you colors proudly this year.
Lastly, thank you to everyone who supported us during the 07 season. Your words of support and kindness meant the world, and allowed us to succeed.
We look forward to an exciting program in 2008!
