View Full Version : SV650 Safety Wiring

As most can tell, I am just trying to get things wrapped up before the race weekend that is quickly approaching.
I am lucky that most of the bike was already wired for race but I have a question on the brakes. I have the caliper mounting bolts wired but do I have to have the banjo bolt that is on the brake lines wired?

+1 from me! i'm prepping for two clubs and i siliconed my banjo bolts as per the rulebook, but it was the other club!!!! i scanned the book and can't find the 'ok to silicone' option, but nor can i find the 'thou shalt safety wire' either, unless they are considered 'oil fixtures' (E.4)

I believe anything with fluid behind it has to be safety wired if at all possible. That includes banjo bolts, hose clamps, oil fittings, etc.

NO NO NO....!!!!!!! you are not required to drill your Banjo Bolts for WMRRA, Other clubs do request it but we do not.....I cant beleive that no one chimmed in on this??????? Feel free to ask if you have anymore questions...There is not as much to wire as you'd think...

i'm pretty darn sure i passed tech last year with silicone on my banjo bolts but if anyone can chime in as to whether that was an oversight or if it was really ok, we'd appreciate it...
edit: fishguy, i wasn't ignoring you, but we were typing at the same time... when i hit enter, your post was already there!

You do not need to secure your brake lines in any other fashion than tightening them properly. We used to require safety wire on the banjos, but it went away a couple of years ago. An indicator, like silicone, is always advised, but I personally don't like the idea of drilling into a hollow bolt.
If you have already siliconed your bolt, no worries, that is just an extra level of security.

So sorry about the suggestion that brake lines need to be safety wired :o . I've been caught at other clubs for NOT having them done. Assumed it was required here too. My bad...As a side note it is REALLY easy to drill the corner of a banjo bolt for safety wire. Sure makes me feel more secure as it is 5 less bolts to check off on my list of things to do.

i was contemplating drilling them, but by the time i'd thought of it i'd already torqued them up and changed the fluid and whatnot... maybe next time i'm changing the fluid i'll pull them off and drill them.

HEHE :D , FG I am scared to weigh in too much...I might find things beyond wiring ;) .
I have EVERYTHING wired except for two nuts and they are on the brake linkage rod. It surprises me that these nuts have to be wired when they are already saftey nuts...but oh well I will head out to drill them today. Then it is time to clean the bike and then put the numbers on! Then repeat the process on the second bike.

Your comments lead me to believe I may be reading the safety wire pics incorrectly?

Look at the rules for what is required to be safety wired. After that then use common sense and experience.
I don't see in the rules saying the brake linkage rod has to be safety wired and if there is already a lock nut on it, it doesn't make sense to me unless you had troubles with that bolt staying on.

You're right...I can't find it in the rules. However, it was in a pic that was given to us in our novice packet.
I have another question on the SV. It says in the rule book...safety wire fork oil drain plugs. I don't see any on an SV. I just see the pinch bolts and the main shaft. Am I missing something?

There aren't any fork oil drain bolts on the SV forks so nothing to wire there.
A bit of history and a suggestion:
History: Many years ago WMRRA instituted a rule requiring the safety wiring of brake banjo bolts, even though there had not been a problem with brake banjo bolts backing out and leaking. A solution to a non-problem. But drilling banjo bolts is much trickier than drilling normal bolts, and it's pretty easy to drill into the fluid cavity (or worse -- so close to the fluid cavity that it doesn't immediately leak but does after eventual heating/cooling/vibration cycles). All of a sudden there was more of a problem with leaking brake banjos than before the wiring rule. So the rule was rescinded and we've been merrily unwired ever since. :)
Suggestion: One thing that is not required to be safety wired, but that I see falling out and causing problems on a not infrequent basis, is the pair of bolts mounting a side-mount steering damper. If you have a side-mount damper you should really drill & wire those. When they drop out, the damper jams your steering and you fall down -- usually in the pits in front of everybody. :)

Second bike? I'm still looking for another sponsor for this year, and also a back-up bike???? :)
