I am setting up a 2003 GSXR 600 and was wondering if anyone has messed around with gearing for tracks in the northwest. What have you found that works good.

When I was running an 01 GSXR 600, I went up one tooth on the front and for Pacific I ran a 48 rear sprocket and I dropped it to a 47 for Spokane. Portland and Pacific gearing were pretty much the same for me...someone may have a better set-up, but this maybe a good place to start!

What we do around here is -1 in the front,+3 to the rear.It cuts top end but increases response big time, and you will use all the power you have on long straights.

I'm probably going to try +1 in the rear or stock for PR and -1 for Spokane on my 04 GSXR600. However since this will be my first year on the bike I will be experimeting for sure.

don't be afraid of down gearing, speccially in a rev happy 600.In most track situations, you will not be able to run out of top end,yet the increased acceleration and response is a plus on 99% of the track. We hava a 1/2 mile straight where geared down 600's are able to top off at around 150MPH,loosing some ground to bigger bikes, but they more than catch up on the infield.Anyway, youre' going to be running against other 600's,and everybody will likely use -1/+3 setup.

i HAVE AN 04 gIX 6 AND DECIDED TO GO -1 IN THE FRONT AND PLUS 2 IN THE REAR. THIS SET-UP SHOULD BE GOOD FOR BOTH TRACKS WITHOUT ANY CHANGES, BUT I MAY DECIDE TO OPT FOR ANOTHER REAR WITH -3 JUST IN CASE I WANT SOMEMORE GRUNT SOMEWHERE...BEST OF LUCK

16/45 = 2.81 stock
15/47 = 3.13
15/42 = 2.80

Seems likea big variance. Guess there is no right answer especialy on how each person rides. I wish I had a ton of cash so I can have several combinations and several chains in case one chain is to short for one ratio and to long for another ratio. Oh to be poor and racing. :D

Where are you getting these ratio's? And are these links per or drive ratio's? TX

This is basic math, divide the front sprocket itnot he rear sprocket. Or in my case I cheat and use http://www.1888fastlap.com/store/customer/pages.php?pageid=4 since I hate math.

Mike, but what are you figureing?????? 3.12 what?

Ok it's the drive ratio. So a larger ratio is more acceleration, but less all out top...But if the ratio is not seriously changed, than you should be able to run the same length chain? NO?

But if the ratio is not seriously changed, than you should be able to run the same length chain? NO?Not necessarily. For example, 15/45 & 16/48 have the exact same ratio (3.0) but 16/48 is going to need a longer chain than 15/45 because both sprockets are larger.

That's what the final drive ratio is. 15/46 will give you better drive with a ratio of 3.06 vs 16/45 (stock) which gives you 2.875 which is more top end.

I my case I'm down 1 and up 2; so I really only added one. So my chain should be fine with the stock # of links....TX

Will argue that you made more a change than what you think 15/47 gives a ratio of 3.13 while stock is 2.81 that's a huge differnce, however you can only besure that your setup work for you when you are on the track that's why I have a 15T, a 16T and 44t-47t rear just to find the right combination that works for my riding style and the track I'm on.

Mike, So You Are At Stock And Then Down 1 And Up 3? For What Bike?

Eric,

I'm going to test out various ratio's but I'm starting with a 15/46 combination hopefully at either the 2-fast or the AF track day. My buddy Steve has the same bike and we both run similiar times with it .25 - .5 sec of each other so it maybe it is easy to compare times with two bikes with slightly different ratios.

Mike, what bike are you running this year?

I'm going to be on an 04 GSXR600 this year. I was on a 99R6 last year and did 0/+2 at PR.

For every 3.12 turns the counter sprocket does the rear tire will turn 1 revolution. Sorry for the delay but I just got back from Feddie's Spencer's school :P

How was Freddies School? I've heard it's one of the better schools.
Give us your opinion and details when you get a chance.
Thanks
