Studio819

Hey guys, I wanted to take the time to answer about 15 email messages and PM's in one thread. Over the past few weeks I have been getting a lot of requests for sponsor photos for Lockhart Phillips catalog. While some people are long time buyers and supporters of Studio819 there have been some incredibly, what I feel, rude requests. To the point that I have even had someone ask for their WMRRA Racer photo to be updated on WMRRA.com so they could download it and send it to LP (yes, that was quite literally the message).
I will cut straight to the chase on this. For those that are have not been frequent buyers and supporters of Studio819 the price for a single image is $50 to send to LP. Allow me to explain why.
1. The people that go up on my site and copy the link from Studio819 to plug themselves all over MySpace and Livejournal as well as email around to all their friends and sponsors are not helping Studio819 at all. In March of this year I walked away from my day job to take this up full time. My sole source of income is from photography, easily 90% from track days and race days. As it stands right now, I will be shutting down Studio819 very soon after the last WMRRA race in October due to lack of sales.
2. LP requires the photo sent to them to be not branded (no WMRRA logo or Studio819 logo watermarking the image. As well as a size much larger then what I provide for WMRRA.com. So the folks that have emailed me saying that this would be "great exposure" are wrong. LP will not credit me in their catalog.
3. LP requires me to sign a release of all rights to the photo. This means that they can publish the photos in any way they choose without paying me a dime. Posters, catalogs, magazines, the works without compensation, telling me that they are using it for such things or even providing me with a copy to add to my portfolio. The industry average in photography for stock images like they are requesting is $425.00 per image (facts based on licensing info found here: http://photographersindex.com/price-adv-calc.htm)
4. Already this season I have donated, completely free mind you, photos for ANY racer to WMRRA.com and have stated that you are free to use the image for your personal websites (see the "Free 2006 WMRRA Photo" thread). This I provided knowing full well that many racers did not plan on buying this season and would just take the freebie and run. I have also provided free photos to WMRRA this season for the programs that you recieve on race weekends without debate, WMRRA simply emailed me a link to the image they wanted and I sent it to them.
Realize as you are reading this that this is not a rant but rather me stating the facts on, what has become, a very frustrating topic to me. At this point there is only one person that I have given the rights to for their LP photo. I will be getting a copy of the catalog myself and expect at this moment to see only his photo in the catalog.
Those that have been supporters of Studio819 this season, are Studio819 sponsored, or have bought their full season DVD's will of course get a sign off from me to LP for the use of their photo. I have absolutely no problems with helping the people that have, quite literally, put the food on my table and paid my child support this year.
