Hey guys, I wanted to take the time to answer about 15 email messages and PM's in one thread. Over the past few weeks I have been getting a lot of requests for sponsor photos for Lockhart Phillips catalog. While some people are long time buyers and supporters of Studio819 there have been some incredibly, what I feel, rude requests. To the point that I have even had someone ask for their WMRRA Racer photo to be updated on WMRRA.com so they could download it and send it to LP (yes, that was quite literally the message).

I will cut straight to the chase on this. For those that are have not been frequent buyers and supporters of Studio819 the price for a single image is $50 to send to LP. Allow me to explain why.

1. The people that go up on my site and copy the link from Studio819 to plug themselves all over MySpace and Livejournal as well as email around to all their friends and sponsors are not helping Studio819 at all. In March of this year I walked away from my day job to take this up full time. My sole source of income is from photography, easily 90% from track days and race days. As it stands right now, I will be shutting down Studio819 very soon after the last WMRRA race in October due to lack of sales.

2. LP requires the photo sent to them to be not branded (no WMRRA logo or Studio819 logo watermarking the image. As well as a size much larger then what I provide for WMRRA.com. So the folks that have emailed me saying that this would be "great exposure" are wrong. LP will not credit me in their catalog.

3. LP requires me to sign a release of all rights to the photo. This means that they can publish the photos in any way they choose without paying me a dime. Posters, catalogs, magazines, the works without compensation, telling me that they are using it for such things or even providing me with a copy to add to my portfolio. The industry average in photography for stock images like they are requesting is $425.00 per image (facts based on licensing info found here: http://photographersindex.com/price-adv-calc.htm)

4. Already this season I have donated, completely free mind you, photos for ANY racer to WMRRA.com and have stated that you are free to use the image for your personal websites (see the "Free 2006 WMRRA Photo" thread). This I provided knowing full well that many racers did not plan on buying this season and would just take the freebie and run. I have also provided free photos to WMRRA this season for the programs that you recieve on race weekends without debate, WMRRA simply emailed me a link to the image they wanted and I sent it to them.

Realize as you are reading this that this is not a rant but rather me stating the facts on, what has become, a very frustrating topic to me. At this point there is only one person that I have given the rights to for their LP photo. I will be getting a copy of the catalog myself and expect at this moment to see only his photo in the catalog.

Those that have been supporters of Studio819 this season, are Studio819 sponsored, or have bought their full season DVD's will of course get a sign off from me to LP for the use of their photo. I have absolutely no problems with helping the people that have, quite literally, put the food on my table and paid my child support this year.

Good on ya Bones!!! I hope you can maintain for next year.. Your shots are something unique my friend. Everyone should buy Studio 819 pics. He has literally put himself in scary spots on the track to get us "that shot"...
See in Oct

I'll be getting a CD Brandon. I'm sorry to hear that you won't be back, your pics are awesome and your creativity shows. :(

I don't know what to say Bones other than I'm sorry things didn't work out. Unfortunately I am quite sure most people just look at their thumbnails on your site and either link them to their personal sites or figure thumbnails with PHOTO pasted over the top are good enough. Sad how cheap (some) people can be.

Maybe you should have only shot (or posted pictures of) riders who specifically requested photos and taken a down payment from them....I don't know. I guess it's a tough business no matter how you slice it.

Good on ya Bones. You provide a really cool service and take wicked photos. $50/print is a steal like you said, and it'll be a shame if you're forced to shut down.

The $50 is for the photo to be able to be sent to LP (meaning I will sign the waiver and not come after people for submitting photos without permission). That price is ONLY about the LP stuff (or any other sponsor asking for similar arrangements) and ONLY for the people that have not been buying stuff all season or buying their full season DVD.

Just making sure people understand

Take a look at the photos racers from other tracks are stuck with. I'd be willing to bet no one gets the angles and shots that are man Bones has been able to snag. Best of luck man.

So is this it for Studio819, or can we expect you back next year?

I sent you an email a bit ago. Want to buy all of your pics of me from the last NESBA weekend that you're putting up (#777, I), but would like them electronically instead of prints. I don't have much use for prints aside from hanging them up in my van (which would seem somewhat narcissistic).

Anyway, sorry to hear things didn't work out this season because not only are your shots hands down the best, but it's cool when a photographer can find me in the pit and tell me what I was doing wrong in T3.

I'm good for one season CD for sure Bones. We'll talk at the last race. I also sent you an email a while ago about doing some poster size stuff for a couple of my sponsors.

Later Bud, hope you are back next year! And Oh Yeah, doesn't child support friggin bite?!

If you buy a CD or a full season DVD (one day or all days) you are more then welcome to send photos digitally or prints to your sponsors. IF they want to use them in catalogs/magazines/etc then they should be contacting me and there should be no money out of your pocket.

ANYONE that has bought a CD or Direct Download from my site is welcome to send their link to friends, family, AND sponsors for them to download the digital originals for personal use. Studio819 is the only company that allows this for both 2005 and 2006 photos.

The way I figure it, I cannot stop you from sending the images to your sponsors so I may as well put it in writing that you can. If your sponsor wants to use an image as their personal desktop image, GREAT!!! If it is something that they want to use in a catalog/magazine then I should be getting paid for it.

Single dates are $55 for a CD at the track or direct download from the Studio819 site. Full season (all track days AND race days...PIR, SRP and PR included) is $400, just over the price of 7 single days (7.272727 for all you MS folks).

Last Adrenaline Freaks event and WMRRA events are coming. If you feel you are missing an angle or want something in particular you just need to ask for it. Reverse angle in T5, above you in T7, down the barrel of the loaded gun in T1, pit shots of you and your team...just simply yell at me in the pits. I'd like to think of myself as WMRRA's photog and you folks are WMRRA. Email me a link to someone else's photo for that matter and tell me you want a shot "That looks like this". Team shots on the track racing like what I do for the Studio819 team and Wolfpack Racing Team are more then welcome also. In the end, this is about you and I want to make it as much something you are proud of as possible.

Send money to Bones via paypal and he can unlock the photos of you. Then you can dl and save them to disc or whatever.

as if I didn't need to kick this dead horse more.

I have been watching the LP Privateer gallery recently and am seeing some familiar photos showing up out there. Those that have and don't have permission, you know who you are.

Something else of interest that I would like to point out to the person that emailed me and mention that LP only wants to use the photos for their catalog and wouldn't be making posters and such like I said earlier. Take a look at this:

-Click this link http://photo.teamprivateer.com/gallery/1807636
-Notice all the LP Privateer Photos show up (and how many *ahem* "high quality" photos there are)
-Now look above the photo on the right. Notice anything? Perhaps "Buy this photo"?
-Yes, by releasing the rights of the photos, LP is now able to sell my shots without giving me a cent.

Yeah, i had slacked off in previous years to update sponsors, send out photos and race results, and generally thank them through out the season. Now with the help of Bones and our team staying on top of this stuff and it really shows. I bit of work early on and it pays off huge in exposure later.

Keep your sponsors happy and it comes back to you! :D

Thanks Studio 819 - we won't let you ever retire from being WMRRA's official photog!!!
