View Full Version : should I feel bad for parting out a perfectly fixable bike?

Not yet doing it but it's an option. Same '99 R6 that supposedly was prepped by EDR for Dugan who won W and OMRRA titles that year. Then the history is unknown, then it sits in someone's garage for two years. Then I get it, spend a boatload of time to get it back on the road. Then the engine blew (details still TBD).

So now I'm obviously a bit ticked at not being able to ride but Ok, taking the engine out and either fixing it or getting another one in.

But I was taking the radiator off the other day and noticed the fork is leaking. F$%k! What next - second gear popping out? Maybe I should just let it go...

The bike has clear title and good frame, full titanium exhaust and some other goodies, so I figure I can get about what I paid for it if I part it out, even sans the engine.

But it just doesn't feel right to part out a well prepped, fully safety-wired bike.

On the other hand, when a much newer R1 can be had for $2500..

On the other hand, I figured what I really want is SV650..

So, set me straight: should I feel bad for junking away the bike or not?

If the motor is toast...then I wouldn't feel too bad.

Is the title clean?

Part it out. BEFORE you have twice into it what you paid. I just rebuilt one and am still finding gremlins here and there. Paid $5,000 and am EASILY out nine or ten by now. (Although in my case I actually wanted a tough project so, aside from financially, it worked out pretty good.) It sucks when you make a plan for what you'll need to replace and what you won't and then start to find that some of the major parts you had classified as "good" are going to cost big bucks to swap.

Yes I wanted a project too, and yes it requires more wrenching that I anticipated. Good thing I don't have a lot of money into this, pretty much got my money's worth out of it already. If I put a used engine in I'll be out about as much as a good street bike of that vintage would cost.

The bike has a clean title, yes.

Now I hear that parting the bike out is quite a lot of work too, and obviously not too much fun. So really it sounds more like "fix it or sell it as is".

How much do you want for it?

How much do you want for it?

Oh, at this point I'm not ready to sell - at least I want to satisfy my curiosity and find out what the heck was it that killed the engine. Or maybe it's just the timing chain skipped a tooth and valves got bent and it's perfectly fixable.

If you really want it right now, at around $2.5K I'd let it go. But I think the market value is lower.

I spent a little time figuring out how much it's worth in parts and slightly over 3K is what I came up with.

$800 straight good frame with clean title
$500 plastics and gas tank (plastics are all slightly scuffed, gas tank has a small dent too)
$350 wheels with tires (michelin DOT race take-offs)
$180 carb (has Factory stage 3 kit)
$600 over racing full titanium exhaust and can, excellent condition
$200 clip-ons, rearsets, etc.
$150 forks
$400 misc parts - fuel pump, starter, swingarm, triple-clamp, wiring harness, ignition, shock, whatever's left from the engine (e.g. gearbox), etc.

But it's work too to get that.

Oh yea, there's a racing fairing plus a brand new chain there too.

I too have an EDR R6, 99-01. I need some parts, let me know if you let anything go. I really need the right handle bar with the master cylinder and an exhaust hanger.

Andrew, I actually have a complete stock right clip-on spare, with master cylinder, throttle, all cables and stuff.. I don't really want to let go of it but if you need it real soon you can have it.

In other news, took the head off yesterday and I might get off easy with just 4 bent valves. Piston tops look undamaged.
