View Full Version : T2 600ss crash on sunday...

i was one of the riders that got caught up in the mayhem in t2 on sunday. i am typing with one hand hence the lack of use of the shift key. i got away easy though with only some torn ligaments in my left shoulder blah blah blah. all i can recall was exiting the turn, heading down the hill and seeing a couple of bikes going down. i think i avoided hitting one of the fallen riders but then think i got hit myself which caused me to crash. there really just wasn't anywhere to go.
but my point of this post is to thank the wmrra staff for doing such a great job attending to everyone and managing this chaos with a high degree of professionalism. i was truly amazed to see how calm they were and how they all knew what to do.
anyways, i'm off to take a nap as the percoset is kicking in again. if anyone else has info or saw the accident and it isin't speculation, please post as i always want to learn from experiences like this.

Heal up soon Steve! Glad to hear that you weren't seriously injured. You had us all scared.
Hope, everyone else involved is doing alright.
Indeed -- we are all SO glad those of you involved are doing ok -- that was definitely a really scary moment for WMRRA this year. We are really fortunate to have the staff we do at WMRRA -- a GREAT group of people who care about what they do, and who care about the riders out there taking the risks we do. Thanks to all of you!! ..and Adam and I had a really good time corner working T8 Sunday -- what a different perspective on things!
Thanks you again WMRRA for making it all happen.

Does anyone have pictures from mine and Tim's crash in Open Twins race on Sunday? From what I hear I caught some good air time. I agree with you all about how good the corner workers are at WMRRA. Great bunch of people working in the corners. Thanks to Russ too for being a familiar voice and talking to me.

Glad you are ok Steve and glad you don't have any broken bones (although soft tissue damage takes longer to heal).
Heal up man...we need you back on the grid!

btw colin, i watched you in your novice race on sat. you were flying! even saw you spin it up a bit exiting t9. you have great style and i'm sure you will be one to watch in the future!
Thanks Steve (really glad you're ok btw) -- More than anything for me, I'm having such a good time out there doing what I truely enjoy, and meeting some great new friends. I am fortunate that I have the support from Eastside Motosports, and from Rick at SB... they have been so awesome as resources and for providing feedback and support -- I think that has had the largest impact on my riding... also the fact that there are some seriously fast people out there to learn from doesn't hurt! Take care, and hopefully we can meet-up and chat one day.

Nice to see everything will heal up. The four of us who were working turn #5 Sunday for our voly day are fire fighters. It doesn't sit well with my experience to listen on the radio and not go manage it or do something to help, seriously frustrating but it sounds like you were in capable hands.
What's the status of your bike?

And as long as everyone is complimenting #900 I'll chime in. I'm tired of getting passed by you, LOL! :)

Hey Steve, I missed having you out there in the 600 SS race to dice with. I hope you heal quickly. I did see a lot of the crashing unfold right in front of me, but it all happened so fast I couldn't give you much detail. I've been told it started when Oliver Jervis' chain fell off and Troy Cook hit the back of him due to Jervis' rapid decrease in speed.

Glad to hear your ok Steve... I am pretty banged up from me yard sale on Friday in turn two AGAIN... Some odd reason that turn doesnt like me.. Looks like me and troy are out for a little while as he recovers his broken collar bone and i look for another bike.... If anybody need parts for a 2001-03 gsx-r 600 including the motor (stock) let me know. And i know those Oxycodones are good :) Good race weekend though, damn number 901 put down a 1:35! Great job...

Ya, me and nicico were all over the place trying to figure out who got hurt in that. Glad everyone is ok. And # 900 and 901, you are very fast and very good. I was able to put down a 1:37 to break my own record and got 3rd PL on Sunday. Just got too tired at the end to keep up with 901. Hoping soon to be up there with you guys!
Congrats on breaking your own record with the 1:37 -- that's movin' out there for sure. I keep trying to just better my own times as well (and not chase others' lap times) and it seems to be working. A bike adjustment here, an attitude adjustment there, etc... Looking forward to next time! Take care guys!

Hell I was just trying to get threw the weekend without busting my body like last time. Although i'm running about 3 seconds slower it was still a fun time. Now just have to get threw the mental aspect and get the rest of my suspension done! I would have to agree that 900 and some others are screaming out there, I'm sure they will be competitive right out of the gate in expert. I would bet top 10 in most classes!

As I was not a witness (I was unconcious or at least don't remember), I'll have to go with Steve's statement from the top of the thread.

I'm OK with just a headache in the back of the head, and a stiff wrist.
No memories exist for me from track entrance from pre-grid to some small snippets in the ambulance. It was 2:00PM till I had a coherent memory thread.
Any stories, pics or video?
Thanks to all the corner workers and anybody who avoided hitting me.

I was in the middle of the pack. Saw a rider in the middle of the track going down in to turn 3 (in white leathers I think) which everyone braked reasonably hard for and swerved around - I don't think that guy got hit. As I braked, I saw a bike over my right shoulder tumbling along the tire wall on the right hand side off the track, followed by the rider rag-dolling along with it. I am unsure if I remember another rider and bike follow after that rider and bike, but I remember a significantly serious melle to realize that the race would be stopped at that point. I filtered round the fallen riders/bikes and saw a red flag by turn 5...
Mark, great to have you here posting with us. Troy341

Troy:
Thanks,
It is good to be here, beats the alternatives.
How are the (at least 4) others involved doing?
I'm not complaining, but I never thought total memory blankout could be
1) that sharp --- I have clear memories to getting on the track after pregrid
2) that retroactive ---- about 7 minutes prior to the actual head thwapping ie warmup lap, grid sorting out etc.
I'm not complaining to much about the memory loss because:
1)I probably _really_ don't want to know all the details
2)the sound track of that memory probably consists of some bad words with long, drawn- out vowel sounds *uuuuuuuuuuu** **iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii*.
We've all heard that stuff before.

Mark just a word of warning. The memory might come back to you all at once and very unexpectly. Hopefully it won't be too tramatic if that happens.
I crashed last year and never lost concisous that I know of. I do know I closed my eyes and certain things happened WAY too fast for me to remember exactly what happened. Fast forward 6 months and I woke up from a very real dream....of my crash. :) Yup I finally got a that half second of what happened into my concious so I could "remember" it.

I know when my bother and I go down we always want a video of it to see what we could learn from it. I've never hit my head hard, but my brother has and from what I know it's still cloudy as to what exactly happened. In a situation like this one I don't think there is too much to learn besides the event of a chain falling off. there was WAY too many bikes on the grid to start with, so any small thing could turn into a bad situation. Again I'm glad to hear all is well!
