So I just got this R6 that was raced localy before and was sitting for a few years in someone's garage. It needs a complete look-over, all fluids changed, carbs cleaned, tires, etc.

There's a nice thick beam in my basement and I thought it'd be nice to just tie the bike up to it by the frame and lift it up so I can tear into it with comfort.

The question is: how the heck do I lift it to begin with, what to use as the suspenders (tie-downs like on a tow truck maybe?), and where to attach them on the frame so they won't get in the way when working on the bike?

Unless you are working on the rear shock itself just putting the bike up on a rear stand will be pretty much all you need to do.

Hanging the bike from rafters doesn't make a bike much easier to work on -- the bike will be swaying around as you torque on things....

If removing the rear shock itself I prefer to use automotive jack stands holding the bike up by the footpegs, provided your footpegs are solid mount instead of folding.

I've hung bikes before to swap front ends from one bike to another. Just used tie down straps to do it.

Hmm.. This makes sense, thank you! And yes, the footpegs are solid mount.
